Our People

As a sport, polo is unparalleled. The players are the true stars of the game, upholding it traditions.

Polo players are an unusual breed of athletes. Although these men and women come from all walks of life and are involved in a myriad of activities, for the most part, their outside time and energy is saved for the game they love most… polo.

While polo can be played and enjoyed at all levels, it is a difficult game to play well. For most, it takes three or four years to gain a modest level of skill.

Polo players receive a handicap rating from the U.S. Polo Association to help keep matches at an equal level. Handicap ratings range from C (minus 2 goals) – the beginner – to 10 goals – theoretical perfection. Each team has an overall handicap; most teams who play at Brandywine have a handicap between 4 and 10 goals. For example, the number 1 player has a handicap of A (0), number 2 has a handicap of (2), number 3 has a handicap of (4), and number four has a handicap of (1). The Team has an overall handicap of 7.
